Les Marchands de Presse
Before delving into our design process, let’s take a moment to appreciate the origins of Les Marchands de Presse — the cornerstone of our project. For decades, Les Marchands de Presse have served as beacons of information and culture in France. These newsstand vendors have played an integral role in the dissemination of information, providing access to newspapers, magazines and literary works. With their distinctive kiosks and storefronts dotting city streets and neighborhoods, Les Marchands de Presse have become fixtures of urban landscapes, embodying the essence of tradition and modernity.
At the end of 2022, the French Ministry of Culture initiated a call for proposals aimed at redefining the visual identity of newsstands, symbols of information dissemination and culture at the heart of our cities and neighborhoods. Faced with this opportunity to rethink the iconic symbol of the quill, we undertook meticulous research and design work, with the aim of capturing the essence of contemporary press while honoring its historical legacy.
This is not a real project, but a fictional and personal one, while awaiting the result chosen by the government.
Redesigning The Logo
At the heart of our project lies the iconic logo of Les Marchands de Presse, a symbol of tradition, community, and the dissemination of knowledge. Our first step was to reimagine this emblematic feather for the digital age while staying true to its heritage. After countless brainstorming sessions and sketching iterations, we arrived at a bold concept — a redesigned feather within a black circular shape, subtly evoking the letter « P » for « Press. » This symbolizes unity, integration, and the vibrant dialogue that newsstands foster within the communities. Incorporating vivid red hues, our quill embodies the vitality, creative momentum, and editorial strength driving the media forward.
Building The Brand & Crafting A Unified Identity
With the logo as our cornerstone, we set out to build a cohesive brand identity that would resonate with our audience. We drew inspiration from the rich cultural heritage of newsstand vendors, infusing our branding with elements of tradition and modernity. From color palettes to typography choices, every aspect of our brand identity was carefully curated to convey our commitment to excellence and innovation.
Envisioning The Future With A Mobile App
With our branding solidified, it was time to translate our vision into a tangible product — the mobile app. Our goal was simple: to change the way users engage with press content on the go. We envisioned a seamless user experience that would empower users to access their favorite press titles, discover new content, and engage with the press community — all from the palm of their hand. With intuitive navigation, geolocation features, and a curated selection of podcasts, our app offers a holistic solution for modern press consumption. And with the added excitement of in-app scratch cards and lotteries, users can enjoy a bit of entertainment along the way, as they would in physical stores.

As we just launched our project, we’re filled with excitement and anticipation for the journey ahead. With our redesigned logo, cohesive branding, and innovative app design, we’re poised to reshape the future of press consumption. But beyond the digital realm, our project is a celebration of the rich cultural heritage of newsstand vendors — a testament to their enduring legacy and vital role in our communities.
As we simply intended to put our mind to use in this self initiated research, we can’t wait to see what direction the French government will chose for this historical piece of our lives.
